MSCSS would like to commend to Rebecca Herndon
on being selected Teacher of the Year  (2009) in DC
for Social Studies!

  • REBECCA HERNDON: Teacher of the Year: The 2009 Founders Day TEACHER OF THE
    YEAR award is being presented to Rebecca Herndon, a teacher at William L.
    Garrison Elementary school. Ms. Herndon has done an outstanding  job of
    incorporating material on African American Civil War soldiers in her student
    activities and academic work. She is doing ground breaking work on the effort to do
    involve Garrison students in an exciting research and exploration project to discover
    the remains of Camp Barker, a contraband camp that was located on the site of the
    school which was the home of Mary Dines, cook to President Lincoln, and home to a
    large number of families of recently freed slaves, including women and children.
  • In June 2009, the Civil War Memorial Museum- Teacher of the Year was presented to
    Rebecca Herndon . She was recognized for outstanding work incorporating material
    on African American Civil War soldiers in her student activities and academic work.  
    Her contribution helps to keep the legacy of these freedom fighters alive.
